Gap Analysis

Gap analysis is a performance management tool that helps identify and close gaps between a company's current and desired state. It's used to create action plans to improve performance.
Current state
A gap analysis template starts with a column called “Current State.” This column lists the processes and characteristics that need improvement in clear and specific terms. The focus areas can vary: sometimes they cover the entire business, while other times they zero in on a specific process, based on the company’s goals. These focus areas can be analyzed in two ways: quantitatively, like counting how many customer calls are answered quickly, or qualitatively, like checking how diverse the workplace is.
Future state
The gap analysis report should also have a column called “Future State,” which describes the target goals the company wants to reach. Like the current state, this section should be clear and measurable. For example, it might set a goal to increase the number of customer calls answered by a certain percentage within a specific time. It could also aim for broader objectives, such as creating a more inclusive office culture.
Gap Description
This column starts by identifying if there is a gap between the company’s current state and future goals. If a gap is present, it outlines what makes up this gap and the factors causing it. This column should clearly and specifically list these reasons. For a more concrete example, factors may be quantifiable (e.g. no existing workplace diversity programs) or qualitative(e.g unchanged volume of customer calls answered).

Next Steps and Proposals
The last column of the gap analysis report is to enlist all potential ways that should be performed in order to fill up the current state with desired future. These objectives must be specific, directly address the factors listed in the gap description, and be stated in active and compelling terms. Some examples include hiring more employees to handle customer calls, setting up a call volume reporting system to ensure enough staff are available, and launching specific office diversity programs and resources.
SWOT Analysis
SWOT, which stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, is a strategy used to analyze internal and external factors impacting the success of a product, project, or person. By identifying these factors, companies can leverage their strengths, allocate resources effectively, and mitigate potential threats.
Nadler
The Nadler-Tushman organizational congruence model, or the Tushman Model for short (created by Columbia University professors David A. Nadler and Michael L. This separates business processes into input, transformation and output. Among inputs are the environment for innovation, facilities and tools you have access to or not, and what is your company culture like. Conversion of inputs into outputs is carried out by systems, people and activities that make up the transformation process. There are outputs at the system level, group levels or in individual level. That is to say, this model shows how failing inputs or transformation can affect company performance reducing the output. It makes the point that to what extent these components are congruent, how well or poorly they fit together and line-up, is directly related to superior performance.
